Addressing Criticism: Mubi's Response to Concerns Over Ties to Sequoia Capital

Mubi has faced criticism from filmmakers for its ties to Sequoia Capital, an investor with connections to the Israeli military. The filmmakers expressed concerns about Mubi's partnership with Sequoia, accusing the company of being complicit in the conflict in Gaza. In response, Mubi's CEO, Efe Cakarel, emphasized that the accusations were unfounded and clarified that the profits generated by Mubi do not fund other companies in Sequoia's portfolio.

Cakarel condemned the tragic events in Gaza and reiterated Mubi's commitment to supporting peace and safety for all people. He addressed the concerns regarding Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire, stating that Maguire has no operational involvement with Mubi and that the company maintains control over its decisions. Cakarel emphasized that Sequoia has minimal influence on Mubi's operations, particularly in programming and financial decisions.

To address the funding concerns, Mubi is implementing an Ethical Funding and Investment Policy, which will establish clear criteria for future funding partners and ensure editorial independence. Additionally, an independent Artists Advisory Council will be formed to provide guidance on ethical funding practices. Mubi is also launching an Artists At Risk Fund to support filmmakers working under conflict, displacement, or censorship, including Palestinian filmmakers.

Cakarel acknowledged that some may feel Mubi's actions are insufficient, while others may think they are excessive. However, he emphasized the company's commitment to promoting diverse voices in cinema and ensuring transparency in its funding practices. Moving forward, Mubi aims to uphold its mission of showcasing exceptional filmmaking and fostering a global community of cinephiles.
