End of an Era: Fraser Downs Racetrack Closure and Its Impact on the Racing Community

Fraser Downs, a popular racetrack in Surrey, may no longer host races as the City of Surrey has terminated the lease held by Great Canadian Entertainment (GCE), the organization managing Fraser Downs and Elements Casino. This decision, effective immediately, includes the closure of the racetrack, backstretch, and stabling facilities that have been in operation for nearly five decades. The termination of the lease has impacted the racing community, team members, and enthusiasts who have been part of Fraser Downs' history. GCE is focused on supporting its team members during this transition and working with the City of Surrey to complete the property handover.
Currently, there are no horses in the backstretch, and training activities have ceased at Fraser Downs due to a rat infestation in the barns. Despite this setback, the grandstand, housing Elements Casino and the racebook, will continue to operate independently. Yuk Yuk's Surrey, located within Elements, will also remain unaffected. Fraser Downs, originally known as Cloverdale Raceway when it opened in 1976, underwent a name change to Fraser Downs in 1996. The track, featuring a 5/8-mile oval for standardbred harness racing, has been a significant part of the community for many years.
As the future of racing at Fraser Downs remains uncertain, the closure of the racetrack marks the end of an era for the standardbred racing community in British Columbia. The impact of this decision extends beyond the physical facilities to the dedicated individuals who have been involved in the sport. While the closure of Fraser Downs may be a significant loss, the legacy of the racetrack and its contributions to horse racing in the region will be remembered by many.
