Pedal Power: The Thrilling Portland Criterium Returns to the Rose City

Portland is known for its unique bike rides, and the Portland Criterium is no exception. Sponsored by Steeplejack Brewing, this event follows the tradition of criterium races where bikers complete multiple laps around a short route, typically on city streets. The first Portland Criterium in 2022 marked the return of this type of race to the Rose City after almost a decade.

The course for the Portland Criterium was approximately half a mile long, featuring six corners and an S-turn around the Pearl District’s North Park Blocks. Races started at 40 minutes in length and culminated in hour-long matches at sunset, providing an exciting and challenging experience for participants of all ages.

Competitors from various age brackets, from juniors to masters, took part in the races, with a few relays for runners adding a different dynamic to the event. Cash prizes were awarded to winners of each race, with additional incentives like beer or cash given out as "prime" prizes to lap winners, adding an extra element of competition to the event.

Over 300 competitors from across the continent participated in this year's Portland Criterium, making it a truly diverse and competitive event. Steven Beardsley, the event director and a former bike racer, emphasized the importance of events like the Portland Criterium in bringing people together and revitalizing the city.

In addition to the thrilling races, the Portland Criterium offered a range of activities for spectators, including a kid's art station, local food vendors, and a DJ performing in a designated beer garden. The event was not just about the races but also about creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere for everyone in attendance.

For those interested in experiencing the excitement of the Portland Criterium, the event will be held again on Sunday at the Lloyd Center, featuring a new course and a variety of events. This unique criterium course around a mall is a rare find and adds to the appeal of the event. Additionally, the organization is partnering with the POP! party at nearby Holladay Park, where attendees can enjoy even more entertainment, including a special appearance by drag queen Poison Waters.
