Guardians of Greatness: Sue Bird Statue Unveiled at Climate Pledge Arena

Climate Pledge Arena is now guarded by a pair of point guards, Lenny and Sue. A statue honoring WNBA legend Sue Bird was unveiled next to the bronze likeness of former SuperSonics player-coach Lenny Wilkens. Sue Bird, a soon-to-be Hall of Famer, expressed her gratitude for the honor, acknowledging her impact on and off the court.

Sue Bird's remarkable 21-season career with the Seattle Storm includes four WNBA titles, 13 All-Star selections, and the all-time assists record. The Storm made history by dedicating a statue to a former player, highlighting Bird's significant contributions to the franchise. Sculptor Julie Rotblatt-Amrany, known for creating sports statues, crafted Bird's statue based on measurements and details chosen by Bird herself.

After retiring in 2022, Sue Bird joined the Storm's ownership group, further solidifying her legacy in Seattle. The statue symbolizes more than just a tribute; it represents a promise to uphold Sue's values and inspire future generations, especially young girls, to see themselves in greatness. A fan festival and a special game called the "Forever Sue" game were scheduled to celebrate the occasion.

Sue Bird reflected on the significance of the statue and the impact it has on others, realizing the magnitude of the moment and what it means for women and WNBA players. The unveiling of the statue marks a pivotal moment in recognizing Sue Bird's legacy and contributions to the sport of basketball.
