Sally Rooney Stands with Palestine Action: Defying Controversy and Supporting Human Rights

Irish author Sally Rooney has pledged her support and financial assistance to Palestine Action, a group recently designated as a terrorist organization in the UK. Rooney, known for her acclaimed novel "Normal People," stated that she will donate her book earnings and BBC adaptations to back the cause, despite the controversial classification. She emphasized her commitment to using her resources and platform to advocate for direct action against genocide in support of Palestine Action.
Palestine Action, although labeled as a terrorist organization in the UK, is not subject to the same designation under Irish law. Sally Rooney, a native of Co Mayo currently residing in western Ireland, has taken a firm stance in supporting the group. The BBC clarified that Rooney is not affiliated with the organization and that her decisions regarding her earnings are her own prerogative.
The Palestinian ambassador in Ireland, Dr Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, commended Sally Rooney for using her voice to denounce human rights violations in Palestine. He expressed hope that Rooney's advocacy will lead to tangible actions to address the ongoing atrocities in the region. Meanwhile, the BBC reiterated that matters related to proscribed organizations fall under the jurisdiction of relevant authorities.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper raised concerns about Palestine Action, characterizing it as more than a typical protest group due to its alleged escalating activities. Cooper emphasized the importance of protecting protest and free speech in a democracy while acknowledging the need to address potential security threats. The organization's actions have reportedly met the criteria for proscription under the Terrorism Act, prompting scrutiny and intelligence assessments.
