Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds - A New Spin on Kart Racing

When it comes to kart racing games, Mario is not the only iconic character in the genre. Other franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Mickey Mouse, Sponge Bob, and the “Family Guy” crew have also ventured into the family-friendly racing scene. However, the “Sonic Racing” series has managed to carve out its own success alongside the famous plumber.
Despite not having much prior experience with the franchise, I recently had the opportunity to try out “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds” and was pleasantly surprised by Sega’s take on kart racing. The game features vehicles that can transform based on the terrain, allowing them to navigate water as boats or soar through the sky as planes. Each form offers a unique control style and emphasis, adding depth to the racing experience.
In “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds,” players can expect familiar kart racing elements such as collecting and using items against opponents. The game’s gadgets have counterparts in “Mario Kart,” making it easy for fans to adapt. While competition can bring out the competitive side in players, the absence of rubberbanding in this game means that those in the lead can maintain their position without artificial catch-up mechanics.
One of the standout features of “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds” is the depth of vehicle customization. With four main vehicle classes focusing on speed, acceleration, power, and handling, players can tailor their cars to suit their preferred playstyle. Customization options are expanded through the use of Donpa Tickets to purchase new parts, adding a layer of strategy to the game.
In terms of track design, Sega introduces an innovative twist by dividing races into three laps. After the first lap, a portal opens up, allowing the leader to choose a new world to race in for the second lap. This dynamic environment change keeps races fresh and unpredictable, ensuring that no two races feel the same across the game’s 24 courses and 15 CrossWorlds.
Players can also participate in seven Grand Prix events, featuring four races across three tracks. The final race in each Grand Prix incorporates elements from previous races, adding a layer of challenge and variety. Additionally, players will have a rival character to compete against, adding charm and personality to the competition.
With its blend of innovation and adherence to the kart racing formula, “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds” offers a fresh take on the genre. Scheduled for release on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, the game promises an exciting and engaging kart racing experience for fans of all ages.
