Reviving Caterham: SKM Racing's Ambitious Return to Formula 1 in 2027

Caterham, a former Formula 1 team that struggled at the back of the grid in 2013 and 2014, may make a comeback in 2027. The revival is spearheaded by 24-year-old Kuwaiti entrepreneur Saad Kassis-Mohamed and his investment firm, SKM Capital. The team, known for its ambition but lack of success, aims to restore the Caterham name and has already set up a technical center in Silverstone and a racing department in Munich. Key positions have been filled, and the team plans to recruit talent from UK and German universities.

SKM Racing, as it is currently known, has earmarked €280 million for the venture and aims to build a sustainable and competitive organization from the outset. The team plans to expand its workforce gradually and is in discussions with current F1 engine suppliers for a multi-year deal. They are considering partnerships with Ferrari or Honda for engine supply. The team has set an ambitious schedule to debut in 2027, pending approval from the FIA and Formula One Management.

The choice of the Caterham name is strategic, as it could facilitate entry into the sport without the burden of reviving the old company's debts. The team is focused on building a strong foundation and aims to be a competitive force in Formula 1.
