2025 College Football Rule Changes: Enhancing Safety, Conduct, and Game Management
College football is set to undergo several significant rules changes for the 2025 season to address various issues within the sport. These changes focus on player safety, conduct, and game management. The NCAA, in collaboration with the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, aims to enhance the game while prioritizing the well-being of student-athletes.
One of the key rule changes involves banning the simulation of brandishing a weapon during celebrations, which will now result in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Additionally, players faking injuries to slow down tempo offenses will face consequences, including a timeout charge and potential delay of game penalty.
Timeout rules in overtime have been adjusted to limit each team to one timeout in the first and second overtimes, with only one total timeout allowed per team from the third overtime onwards. On kickoffs, a new signal has been introduced to indicate a fair catch, leading to an immediate play stoppage.
Defensive players are now prohibited from mimicking a quarterback's cadence or making abrupt movements to draw a false start penalty. Coaches are no longer allowed to exploit substitution infractions to run down the clock, as these infractions will now be treated as live-ball fouls.
Sideline tablet usage has been restricted to prevent the uploading of play sheets and analytics during games. Players are now limited to clear visors only, with tinted or multi-color shields prohibited. The definition of a defenseless player has been expanded to include those pursuing a loose ball, emphasizing fair play and player safety.
