La Liga Players Oppose Barcelona vs. Villarreal Match in Miami: AFE's Stand Against Overseas Games

The Professional Footballers' Association in Spain (AFE) has expressed its opposition to the proposal of moving Barcelona's match against Villarreal to Miami in December. The captains of the twenty La Liga teams gathered to voice their concerns about the lack of communication and information from La Liga regarding the decision to play games overseas. While some clubs are in favor of the idea, others, including Real Madrid, are firmly against it. The Spanish Football Federation has presented the proposal to FIFA and UEFA, suggesting that the game could take place at the Hard Rock Stadium.
The AFE, supported by the La Liga captains, firmly opposes the idea of playing a league game outside of Spain. The lack of transparency and dialogue from the league regarding the proposal has been a point of contention for the players. Despite requesting more information on the matter, the league only provided updates on the authorization process, leading to frustration among the players. The players feel that the initiative to play a game abroad without proper consultation is disrespectful and could have implications on the sporting aspect and travel arrangements for the players.
While Spain has taken the Super Cup abroad, La Liga has not yet seen a match played outside the country. In contrast, the Premier League has no intentions of hosting matches outside of England, as confirmed by chief executive Richard Masters. The Premier League had considered the idea in the past to expand its international reach but has since shifted its focus to other strategies like digital platforms and broadcast partnerships. The Premier League's stance on playing matches abroad remains clear, with no plans to pursue such initiatives.
