The Road to the Playoffs: Texas High School Football Season Preview
Friday night football is a beloved tradition in Texas, with high school teams gearing up for the start of the season. While many teams are just beginning their journey to the playoffs, 28 teams from Class 2A to 5A have already secured their spots in the postseason.
In the past, being a district champion in Texas meant being the sole representative in the playoffs. Over the years, the playoff format has evolved to include more teams. Currently, the top 2 teams in Class A and the top 4 teams in Class 2A through 6A earn playoff berths.
Some districts with only 4 teams are mainly playing for playoff seeding and pride, as all teams in these districts advance to the postseason. However, there are concerns that the 4-team inclusion may diminish the significance of making the playoffs, especially in districts with fewer teams.
The playoff format can lead to lopsided bi-district games, with some teams scoring high points in blowout victories. Despite this, there have been notable upsets in the bi-district round, adding excitement to the playoff race.
