Grandson Arrested for Allegedly Stealing $1 Million from Grandmother in Nursing Home

A man from South Carolina has been taken into custody for allegedly stealing around $1 million from his grandmother while she was residing in a nursing home in Indiana. Eric Dyer, 54, from Batesburg, faces charges of theft, money laundering, corrupt business influence, neglect of a dependent, and elder abuse, as per a news release from Indiana State Police on August 21.
The investigation into Dyer began in May 2024 when a financial institution reported suspicious transactions involving an elderly woman in Indiana. It was revealed that Dyer, who was the woman's grandson and had power of attorney over her, withdrew close to $1 million from her bank account between 2022 and 2024. During this time, the woman was living in an assisted living center, and Dyer was responsible for her as her legal guardian.
Authorities found that Dyer had been using the stolen funds for his personal expenses and had fallen behind on paying the monthly costs of the woman's assisted living facility. Dyer was apprehended on August 21 in Madison, located approximately 100 miles southeast of Indianapolis.
In conclusion, Eric Dyer's arrest sheds light on the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals, especially the elderly, from financial exploitation and abuse. It serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard the financial well-being of our loved ones.
