Unranked but Unforgettable: USC Trojans' Gameday Traditions

College football games are known for their exciting opening acts, including spirit teams, pre-game traditions, mascots, and marching bands. ESPN recently ranked the nation's best college football gameday traditions, but surprisingly, the USC Trojans Spirit of Troy was not included. The USC Trojan Marching Band is renowned as one of the most iconic marching bands in the country and plays a significant role in creating the vibrant atmosphere at USC home games in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Despite its rich traditions and impressive performances, USC did not make it onto any of the categories in the ranking.

Some of the categories in the ranking included "Dramatic Entrances," "Touching Tributes," "Music that gets you moving," "That’s dedication," "Getting Revved Up," "Strike Up the Band," and "Animal Planet." Notable traditions from other schools included Florida State's Osceola and Renegade planting the spear, Wisconsin's "Jump Around," and Ohio State's Script Ohio. While USC was not mentioned in the ranking, the Trojans could easily fit into categories like "Dramatic Entrances," "Animal Planet," and "Strike up the Band."

One of USC's standout traditions is the dramatic entrance of Traveler, the USC mascot, and Tommy the Trojan. Traveler, adorned in Trojan armor, charges down the field at the Coliseum before each game, energizing the crowd and embodying the Trojan spirit. The inspiration for Traveler came from a student riding a white horse in the 1961 Rose Parade, with additional influence from the Tommy the Trojan statue on campus. Another overlooked tradition is the USC Trojan Marching Band, which has been a vital part of pre-game festivities and sporting events on campus since 1880.

Despite being left out of the ESPN ranking, USC's gameday traditions are rich in history and spirit. The Trojans' dedication to creating an electrifying atmosphere at their games is evident through their iconic traditions and performances. USC's Traveler and Tommy the Trojan, along with the Trojan Marching Band, play integral roles in enhancing the gameday experience for fans and showcasing the university's deep-rooted traditions.
