The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) has released updated plans for a high-speed rail line in the Central Valley that aims to connect the region to major population centers in the state by 2038 to 2039. The CHSRA presented three potential visions for the completed network in a supplemental document published on Friday. The first option involves a 171-mile high-speed rail line connecting Merced to Bakersfield, with construction already underway and an estimated completion date of January 1, 2032. This segment is expected to serve 1.6 million to 2.2 million passengers annually, generating revenue of $39.3 million to $55.6 million.
The second scenario proposed by the CHSRA would extend the high-speed rail line to Gilroy, linking to services in San Francisco and Sacramento. This extension is projected to cost $54.4 billion and could be operational by early 2038, serving 8.7 million to 11.8 million passengers annually with revenue of $623.7 million to $882.9 million. The most expansive proposal envisions extending the line to Palmdale, Los Angeles County, with a connection to Los Angeles. This option is estimated to cost $87.1 billion and could generate annual revenue of $1.1 billion to $1.6 billion from 12.5 million to 17.4 million passengers.
The potential connection to Brightline West, a high-speed rail line under construction to link Las Vegas to southern California, through the High Desert Corridor is also being considered. CHSRA CEO Ian Choudri expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the project, highlighting the opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.
