Former NBA All-Star Shawn Kemp Sentenced to Electronic Home Monitoring: A Look at the 2023 Shooting Incident

Former NBA All-Star Shawn Kemp has been sentenced to 30 days of electronic home monitoring following a 2023 shooting incident in Washington state. Kemp, 55, will also serve one year of community custody and complete 240 hours of community service as part of his sentencing. He pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in May after initially facing more serious charges related to the shooting at Tacoma Mall.
The standard sentencing range for second-degree assault in Washington is between three and nine months in jail, with a maximum sentence of 10 years confinement and a fine of up to $20,000. Kemp was charged after firing at two men in a vehicle at the mall parking lot, claiming self-defense. The men fled the scene, and their vehicle was later found abandoned with an empty gun holster inside. Both men are currently serving prison sentences in unrelated cases.
Kemp, a former six-time NBA All-Star, played 14 seasons in the league from 1989 to 2003. He started his career with the Seattle SuperSonics, where he earned five consecutive All-Star selections. Kemp was later traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and also had stints with the Portland Trail Blazers and Orlando Magic before retiring. Throughout his career, Kemp averaged 14.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game in over 1,000 appearances.
