Indy Races: A Family's Mission to Support Children Fighting Cancer

A Topeka family is dedicated to supporting children fighting cancer and their families by organizing the annual Indy Races event at Lake Shawnee. Sterling Scales, along with his sons Indy and Pacer, created the event to give back after receiving tremendous support during Indy's battle with Wilms Tumor cancer. Each year, the family selects a different charity to benefit, focusing on aiding children with serious pediatric illnesses and their families. Past events have supported organizations like Children’s Miracle Network and Ronald McDonald House, and this year, Indy Races is teaming up with Make-A-Wish of Kansas and Missouri to fulfill a child's wish. The 2025 Indy Races will kick off at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, offering participants the choice of 1 Mile, 5K, or 10K routes, or the 6.8-mile Race around the Lake. Those interested can register in advance on runsignup.com.
