Remembering the Heroes: Commemorating the 4th Anniversary of the Abbey Gate Attack in Kabul

Four years ago, a tragic suicide bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan, claimed the lives of 13 United States Armed Forces heroes, leaving a lasting impact on Americans and our allies. As we remember this devastating attack, we honor the memory of these brave warriors who sacrificed everything for our country. We stand in solidarity with the families who lost loved ones and pledge to never forget the fallen patriots.

In July 2021, President Joe Biden initiated a chaotic withdrawal from Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, creating a vulnerable situation for our military personnel and enabling the Taliban to release dangerous prisoners. The consequences of this hasty decision became evident on August 26, 2021, when an ISIS-K terrorist carried out a deadly suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, resulting in the tragic deaths of 13 American service members and numerous civilian casualties.

The heart-wrenching scenes of the fallen service members returning home in flag-draped coffins, escorted by their comrades, will forever be etched in our memories. The names of the 13 courageous individuals who lost their lives in the line of duty are eternally honored, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten. The solemn duty to ensure the safety and well-being of our military personnel remains a top priority for our nation.

The events surrounding the Abbey Gate attack underscored a significant loss of life and a profound failure in American foreign policy. The aftermath of the attack left many Americans and Afghan allies stranded, innocent civilians dead, and valuable military equipment in the hands of the enemy. The need for a strong and decisive foreign policy approach to prevent such tragedies in the future became apparent.

In the wake of the Abbey Gate attack, my Administration has been committed to pursuing justice for the victims and their families through a foreign policy strategy focused on strength and security. The apprehension of the ISIS Jihadi responsible for the Kabul airport atrocity symbolizes our unwavering dedication to holding perpetrators of terrorism accountable and ensuring the safety of our citizens.

As we reflect on the fourth anniversary of the Abbey Gate attack, we pay tribute to the 13 fallen heroes and all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. We reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding American lives, defending our interests, and upholding our sovereignty. Let us honor the memory of these brave individuals and the families who carry on their legacy with pride.

On August 26, 2025, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, proclaim this day as a commemoration of the 4th anniversary of the Abbey Gate attack. I urge all Americans to remember the heroism of our fallen servicemen and women and the resilience of Gold Star Families who continue to honor their loved ones' legacy.
