Success Stories: Adult Learn to Play Program at Kraken Community Iceplex

Join us at the Kraken Community Iceplex for our Adult Learn to Play program, where progress is evident from the first week to the tenth. Three of our Kraken colleagues, Maddie Scheutzow, Princess Lawrence, and De’Aira Anderson, have taken on the challenge this summer and have seen significant improvements in their hockey skills.
Maddie Scheutzow initially joined the Adult Learn to Play class as a way to enhance her hockey acumen, a goal she set for herself at work. She convinced Princess Lawrence to join her, and together they embarked on this new adventure. De’Aira Anderson also joined in, excited to finally participate in the program after talking about it for years.
The trio quickly bonded on the ice, supporting each other and having fun during the 10-week program. From learning how to fall and get back up to improving their skating and stickhandling skills, the progress they made was remarkable. The camaraderie and excitement among the participants were palpable as they worked hard to improve their game.
The Adult Learn to Play program at the Kraken Community Iceplex has been a huge success, with participants eager to continue playing after completing the course. The Kraken Hockey League offers opportunities for players to join recreational games or repeat the program to further enhance their skills. Registration for the Fall 2025 sessions is now open, and anyone interested in learning to play hockey can sign up on our website.
The program instructors, led by Martin Hlinka, introduce new concepts each week to help participants navigate the learning curve. From defensive strategies to forechecking techniques, the instructors guide the players through various aspects of the game. The whiteboard sessions and on-ice drills provide a hands-on learning experience that enhances the participants' understanding of the sport.
For Scheutzow, Lawrence, and Anderson, learning to play hockey has been a fulfilling experience that goes beyond just acquiring new skills. They have found joy in the sport and plan to continue playing for the sheer fun of it. The sense of accomplishment and camaraderie they have gained from the program has been invaluable, and they look forward to further honing their skills on the ice.
