Cannes Camera d’Or winner Vimukthi Jayasundara's latest film, Spying Stars, has been acquired by Bangkok-based sales agent Diversion ahead of its world premiere in Busan's new Competition section. The film follows a scientist who embarks on a journey to fulfill her father's final wish amidst a pandemic in a machine-dominated world. As she encounters a mysterious star, she seeks refuge with a mother and her transgender daughter. Director Jayasundara explores themes of loss, mourning, and humanity in a technologically controlled society.
Spying Stars will compete for the top Busan Award and other accolades at the festival. The film features rising Indian actress Indira Tiwari in a leading role, known for her work in Gangubai Kathiawadi. The production is a collaboration between France's House on Fire, India's Eleenanora Image, and co-producer Bombay Berlin Film Productions, with support from various film funds.
Diversion's autumn lineup also includes Siyou Tan's Amoeba, a Singaporean coming-of-age drama premiering at Toronto's Discovery section, and Mahde Hasan's Sand City, winner of the Proxima grand prize at Karlovy Vary. Both films will also screen at Busan. The acquisition of Spying Stars adds to Diversion's diverse and compelling film slate, showcasing a range of international talent and storytelling.
