Witchazel: A North Iowa Band's Journey to the Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame

Witchazel, a North Iowa band, is set to be inducted into the Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame on August 31. The band, formed in the 1990s, brought together talented musicians to create a unique rock sound that resonated with audiences in North Iowa. The band's lineup solidified with Brent Eveland on vocals, Dan Rish and Mark Hestness on guitars, Dave Haag on bass, and Bill Oglesby on drums.

The origins of Witchazel trace back to the breakup of another band, Lexx Luther, where Haag, Eveland, and Riggin were previously playing together. Haag convinced Eveland and Riggin to start a new project in Mason City, which eventually led to the formation of Witchazel. With the addition of Hestness and Rish, the band found its signature sound and began performing live shows.

The band's performances quickly gained popularity, drawing larger crowds and eventually headlining at prominent venues like the Surf Ballroom and Museum in Clear Lake. The chemistry among the band members was undeniable, with each member bringing their unique talents and passion for music to the stage. Their shared love for rock 'n' roll covers and live performances reignited the local music scene in Mason City and North Iowa.

Despite taking a hiatus in the mid-1990s, Witchazel reunited for special occasions, including a benefit concert at the Surf Ballroom in memory of a friend. The band's bond was tested when they lost guitarist Dan Rish in 2025, leading them to question their future as Witchazel. However, they decided to honor Rish's memory by performing together at their induction into the Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

The band members expressed their deep respect and admiration for each other as musicians, highlighting the strong camaraderie and musical connection that defined Witchazel's sound. While they acknowledged the challenges of moving forward without Rish, they remained open to the possibility of playing together under a different name in the future. The legacy of Witchazel lives on through their music and the memories they created together on stage.
