Jordyn Machmer: A Northern Hockey Star's Journey to the South
Jordyn Machmer, a 14-year-old from Pangnirtung, Nunavut, is embarking on a new adventure by heading south to Ontario for a year to pursue her passion for hockey. She recently secured a spot on the U15 AA hockey team, Scarborough Sharks, in Toronto after participating in a showcase event organized by the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). Her parents initially had reservations about the move but eventually supported her decision to play competitive hockey in the south.
Machmer has been playing hockey since a young age and represented Team Nunavut's U20 female hockey team at the Arctic Winter Games when she was 11. She is known for her hard work and determination, qualities that have set her apart in her hockey journey. Despite being the only girl from Nunavut on her new team, Machmer is excited about the opportunity to challenge herself and improve her skills through the upcoming season, which will involve playing 70 games and participating in eight tournaments.
For Machmer, this experience will be a significant departure from her home in Pangnirtung, where the community lacks artificial ice, and she relies on her father to build her an outdoor rink for practice. As she prepares for the year ahead, her father, David Kilabuk, is ensuring that all necessary arrangements, such as high school registration, are in place before he returns to Pangnirtung. Despite some lingering worries, Kilabuk is confident in his daughter's ability to navigate this new chapter in her hockey journey.
As Machmer embarks on this exciting opportunity to play hockey in Ontario, she is grateful for the support of her family and the chance to pursue her passion for the sport she loves. With determination and a positive attitude, she is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the upcoming year.
