Vinny Appice: A Drummer's Journey with Black Sabbath

When Vinny Appice joined Black Sabbath in 1980, he stepped in as the drummer after Bill Ward left the band abruptly. Ward's departure left the band in a tough spot right before a sold-out show in Denver. Appice, who had previously played with Rick Derringer and his own band, Axis, was brought in as a temporary replacement but ended up staying with the band as Ward never returned. Appice quickly bonded with Ronnie James Dio, the new frontman, and seamlessly integrated into the band's lineup.

Appice's chemistry with Dio, Geezer Butler, and Tony Iommi was immediate and effortless. They played together like a well-oiled machine, focusing solely on the music. After completing the successful Heaven and Hell tour, Appice contributed to Black Sabbath's next album, Mob Rules. When Dio left the band in 1982 to form his own group, Appice followed suit. Over the years, Appice had the opportunity to reunite with Black Sabbath for various projects, including the albums Dehumanizer and The Devil You Know released under the Heaven & Hell moniker.

Reflecting on his time with Black Sabbath, Appice expressed gratitude for the chance to play alongside legends like Iommi, Butler, and Dio. Despite playing with them on and off since 1980, the experience of sharing the stage with such iconic musicians remained special to him. Appice considers himself fortunate to have been a part of Black Sabbath's legacy and to have contributed to their music over the years.
