Workers Over Billionaires: Norfolk Activists Rally for Working Families

Activists in Norfolk came together on Labor Day for a national event called “Workers Over Billionaires” to advocate for protections for working families and address concerns about a billionaire takeover that threatens democracy. The rally, part of the Mayday Strong movement, took place at Town Point Park along Waterside Drive and was one of over a thousand demonstrations happening nationwide on that day. Participants called for increased support for social programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, as well as investments in schools and local communities.

Sharon McQeen, the chief organizer of the rally, emphasized the importance of removing money from politics and safeguarding the rights of ordinary Americans. Demonstrators at the event echoed this sentiment, with attendee Lori Wright stressing the need for tax breaks, SNAP benefits, and resources for those who are supporting each other but lack financial assistance. The rally in Norfolk drew around 300 participants who were set to lead a two-mile march through downtown Norfolk to underscore the significance of collective action and solidarity in supporting working families.
