2026 NHL Playoff Salary Cap and Dress Code Changes Announced

The NHL and NHLPA have accelerated the introduction of a playoff salary cap for the 2026 post-season, as reported by NHL insider Frank Seravalli. This playoff salary cap was initially part of the upcoming collective bargaining agreement set to take effect in the 2026-27 season. However, both parties have decided to implement the salary cap immediately as part of a phased introduction of new regulations.
Previously, teams would place players with long-term injuries on LTIR until the start of the playoffs, effectively circumventing the salary cap. This practice allowed teams to trade for players with high salaries and then bring back the injured player just in time for the post-season. To address this issue, the new rule mandates that playoff teams field a lineup whose combined salaries do not exceed the cap for each playoff game. Injured players and healthy scratches will not count against the playoff cap.
In addition to the playoff salary cap, the NHL and NHLPA have also agreed to enforce changes to the dress code and players' ability to endorse wine and spirits starting this season. Contracts signed before September 15, 2026, will continue to be governed by the current collective bargaining agreement.
