Hoops for Hope: Cañon City High School Seniors Organize Charity Basketball Tournament for Cancer Research and Community Support

Three Cañon City High School seniors, Kayden Benson, Tanner Kammrad, and Brehner Jackson, have embarked on a capstone project to benefit the community. Their project, Hoops for Hope, is a three-versus-three basketball tournament aimed at raising funds for cancer research and supporting a local family in need. The idea stemmed from a desire to combine their love for basketball with a meaningful cause, inspired by personal connections to individuals affected by cancer. The tournament, scheduled for Saturday at Cañon City Middle School, is the culmination of months of planning and collaboration with community experts, including guidance from Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District Executive Director Kyle Horne.
The group of high school students, who have been playing basketball together since freshman year, sees Hoops for Hope as an opportunity to not only raise awareness about cancer but also provide tangible support to families facing the challenges of the disease. With the help of Horne and other community partners, they have worked diligently to organize the event, from setting a budget to promoting participation. Their goal is to make a positive impact on the community by bringing people together through sports while contributing to a meaningful cause.
Teams of up to four players can register for the tournament, with registration fees varying based on age groups. The event promises an afternoon of friendly competition and camaraderie, with all proceeds going towards assisting a local family affected by cancer. In addition to the tournament, attendees are encouraged to make donations to further support the cause. The students hope that Hoops for Hope will not only raise funds but also serve as a platform for raising awareness about cancer and fostering community engagement.
As the Hoops for Hope tournament approaches, the students are eager to see their vision come to life and make a difference in the lives of those impacted by cancer. Their dedication to combining their passion for basketball with a charitable cause exemplifies the spirit of community service and teamwork. By organizing this event, they aim to create a lasting impact on the Fremont County community and inspire others to support meaningful causes.
