Belinda Carlisle: A Musical Journey from The Go-Go's to 'Once Upon a Time in California
Belinda Carlisle, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and the lead singer of The Go-Go’s, discussed her latest solo studio album, “Once Upon a Time in California,” which was released in August. The Go-Go’s made history by being the first all-female group to top the Billboard 200 charts with their album “Beauty and the Beat.” Carlisle shared that her new album had been in the works for a while and expressed her excitement about its release after facing delays due to the pandemic.
The album, which marks Carlisle’s return to English-language music after nearly three decades, features cover songs that inspired her as a singer. She aimed to maintain the original essence of each song while adding her own touch during the recording process. Carlisle highlighted “The Air That I Breathe” as her favorite track on the album and shared her enjoyment of reimagining classic songs like “Never My Love” with a Beach Boys vibe.
Carlisle also reflected on her collaboration with Diane Warren on the “Kismet” EP and her upcoming tour dates in Europe and the East Coast. She expressed her love for performing and hinted at potential future projects without concrete plans yet. Carlisle praised Rihanna’s rendition of her hit song “Heaven is a Place on Earth” in a “Smurfs” movie and shared her appreciation for artists who reinterpret her music in different styles.
In a nod to her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Go-Go’s in 2021, Carlisle described the experience as surreal and unforgettable. She credited her longevity in the music industry to working with talented songwriters and having a unique voice that resonates with audiences.
