Changing Holiday Shopping Trends: Gen Z Leads the Way in Spending Cuts

Holiday shoppers are expected to cut back on their spending this year, according to a recent survey by consulting firm PwC. Across different age groups, consumers are planning to spend an average of $1,552 on holiday gifts, travel, and entertainment, which is a 5% decrease from last year. Generation Z is showing the most significant decline, with members planning to spend 23% less than last year, reflecting a shift in their shopping behavior towards value and cost transparency.

Gen Z, aged 13 to 29 with an average age of 22, are known for their focus on price and smart shopping. They prioritize experiences like concerts and vacations over buying new items, which is impacting their holiday spending. Retailers are finding it challenging to keep up with this generation, as they quickly adopt and abandon trends. The uncertainty surrounding the holiday season is further compounded by price sensitivity due to higher tariff costs.

While other generations' holiday spending expectations remain relatively stable compared to last year, baby boomers are planning to spend 5% more on average. Consumers are becoming more cautious about rising living costs and potential price increases from tariffs, leading them to pay closer attention to prices and seek out the best deals by shopping early or delaying purchases. The holiday season is shaping up to be influenced by changing consumer behaviors and economic factors.
