ABC's Shifting Gears Season 2 Episode Count Increased to 13: What to Expect Next

ABC has decided to increase the episode count for Season 2 of the comedy series Shifting Gears from 10 to 13, adding three more episodes to the season. This is more than the first season of the show, which had 10 episodes. However, it falls short of a full-season order, which typically consists of 18 episodes or more. The multi-camera sitcom stars Tim Allen and Kat Dennings and airs on Wednesdays.

The network has another comedy series lined up for midseason, a Scrubs reboot featuring original cast members Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and John C. McGinley. While ABC has not yet announced its midseason schedule, it is likely that Scrubs will take over the Wednesday time slot currently occupied by Shifting Gears once the latter completes its 13-episode run. ABC recently ordered a comedy pilot titled Do You Want Kids? starring Rachel Bloom for a future season.

In the fall, ABC's comedy block includes Shifting Gears at 8 PM followed by the critically acclaimed Abbott Elementary at 8:30 PM. Abbott Elementary, created by Quinta Brunson, has been receiving full-season orders since its debut in midseason 2021-22. The show is expected to be a good fit alongside Scrubs, as both are single-camera workplace comedies. It remains to be seen whether ABC will keep Abbott Elementary in its current time slot or reshuffle the comedy block for midseason.

Shifting Gears, which was the fifth-ranked scripted series on ABC last season, follows Dennings' character, a single mother who moves in with her estranged father, played by Allen, who owns an auto restoration shop. The main cast also includes Seann William Scott, Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. Tim Allen serves as an executive producer alongside showrunner Michelle Nader and a team of other producers. The series was created by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully.
