Haunting Deals: The Dark Tale of 'The Man in My Basement

Charles Blakey has inherited a haunted house in Sag Harbor, which has been in his family for generations. The house holds a dark history, and Charles finds himself isolated and struggling financially. When a stranger named Anniston Bennet offers to rent his basement for a large sum of money, Charles reluctantly agrees. As Charles clears out the basement, eerie visions and nightmares begin to haunt him, but the allure of the cash offer is too tempting to resist.

Despite initial reservations, Charles allows Anniston to move in, and their interactions become increasingly tense. When a curator named Narciss Gully becomes involved, the dynamics between the characters shift, revealing hidden motivations and complex relationships. As Anniston's true intentions are unveiled, Charles must confront the consequences of his deal with a dangerous man.

The film, set in 1994, explores themes of isolation, greed, and the supernatural. With a strong first act that sets up a compelling premise, the story loses momentum as it delves into multiple subplots and character dynamics. While the performances and cinematography are noteworthy, the film struggles to maintain coherence and fails to fully explore the complexities of its characters and themes.

"The Man in My Basement" premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and will be released in theaters by Andscape on September 12, followed by a streaming release on Hulu. Despite its ambitious adaptation of the Walter Mosley novel, the film falls short of delivering a cohesive and impactful narrative.
