The NHL Reigns Supreme: A Look at Canada's Sports Fandom Landscape

Canadians are known for their love of sports, with more than three-quarters of the population considering themselves sports fans. The NHL stands out as the most popular professional sports league in the country. A recent survey conducted by The Strategic Counsel involved 3,240 Canadians from all regions, revealing that 77% of respondents identified as sports fans, with 29% considering themselves "big fans." Nearly half of the participants either casually followed multiple leagues or were big fans of a single league, while 23% were non-fans who did not follow any leagues.
The NHL emerged as the top league in Canada, with 58% of respondents indicating that they follow men's professional hockey. Following the NHL, the NFL garnered 37% of fans, with MLB at 34%, CFL at 32%, and NBA at 29%, rounding out the top five nationally. Other leagues like Formula One auto racing and professional tennis also had significant followings. Interestingly, major junior hockey leagues like the Western Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League would rank in the top 10 in their respective regions if considered alongside professional leagues.
Among Canadian women surveyed, half of them follow the NHL, making it the most popular league among women. The NFL, MLB, CFL, and NBA also had substantial female followings. Surprisingly, the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) garnered significant attention, with 15% of Canadian women being fans, ranking it ahead of established leagues like MLS and the PGA Tour. The upcoming launch of the Toronto Tempo in the WNBA and the Northern Super League in women's soccer is expected to further boost female interest in these sports.
When it comes to favourite athletes, Edmonton Oilers' Connor McDavid topped the list, closely followed by Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Soccer stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, along with Toronto Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews, rounded out the top five. Regional pride was evident in the survey results, with local favorites like Cole Caufield in Quebec and Brad Gushue in the Atlantic provinces making the list. The survey, conducted in March, did not provide a margin of error due to its online nature.
In conclusion, the survey highlights the strong sports culture in Canada, with the NHL leading the way as the most popular league. Female interest in sports is also on the rise, with leagues like the PWHL gaining traction. Regional pride and admiration for local athletes were evident in the survey findings, showcasing the diverse sports landscape across the country.
