New Mini Ice Rink at McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre: Meeting the Growing Demand for Ice Time
A new mini ice rink is currently under construction at the McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre. The rink is being built in the former space of the McArthur Island Curling Club, which closed its doors in March after six decades. Dasher boards, netting, and bleachers have been installed around the oval surface, along with upgrades to the refrigeration system and the addition of rubber mats in the non-playing area.
The decision to create the mini ice rink was made in response to the growing demand for ice time in the area. Sherri Holmes, the city’s sport, recreation, and wellness manager, highlighted the need to expand capacity for ice sports while the multiplex is still in development. The new rink will cater to U-7 and U-9 teams, providing a smaller ice surface for games and practices, as well as offering more opportunities for public and club skating.
Funding for the conversion project comes from Build Kamloops funds allocated for the planned arena multiplex in Dufferin. The mini rink is expected to bring in approximately $100,000 in additional revenue per season, while also freeing up more ice time for older age groups at full-size rinks.
