Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club: Final Performances and Farewell to Broadway

The Broadway revival of the musical "Cabaret" will be ending its run at the Kit Kat Club, formerly known as the August Wilson Theatre, on September 21, a month earlier than previously announced. The production, which will have played 18 previews and 592 regular performances by its final show, has faced challenges in selling enough tickets to cover its high production costs. Despite its success in London's West End, the Broadway version has struggled to attract audiences. Billy Porter, who was set to star as the Emcee, had to withdraw due to health reasons, with Marty Lauter and David Merino stepping in for the final performances alongside Marisha Wallace. The show's producer, Adam Speers, expressed sadness over the decision to end the Broadway run early but invited audiences to experience the final performances at the Kit Kat Club.
The immersive staging of "Cabaret" at the Kit Kat Club has been a unique experience for theatergoers, with the theater transformed into an in-the-round setting reminiscent of a Weimar-era Berlin nightclub. Ticket holders are treated to a pre-show performance by a prologue company of dancers and musicians before the main show begins. The musical, based on Christopher Isherwood's work, follows the story of American writer Clifford Bradshaw and English cabaret performer Sally Bowles in 1930s Berlin as the Nazis rise to power. The creative team behind the production includes choreographer Julia Cheng, set and costume designer Tom Scutt, and music supervisor Jennifer Whyte, among others.
The decision to end the Broadway run of "Cabaret" earlier than planned has been met with disappointment by fans of the show. Despite the challenges faced by the production, the immersive staging and talented cast have made it a memorable experience for audiences. As the final performances approach, theatergoers are encouraged to visit the Kit Kat Club one last time to witness the captivating performances of Marisha Wallace, Marty Lauter, and David Merino in this iconic musical.
