Breaking Barriers: Ashley Johnston and Sydney Harris Pave the Way for Female NHL Referees

Ashley Johnston and Sydney Harris are set to make history as they participate in the 2025 NHL Prospect Tournament as officials. Both women are aiming to become the first female referees in NHL regular season games. The tournament will feature numerous prospects vying for their chance to make it to the big leagues, while Johnston and Harris will be making their mark in a different capacity.

Johnston, a former college and professional hockey player, has transitioned to officiating after her playing days. She sees officiating as a way to stay connected to the game and experience the thrill of being on the ice. Harris, on the other hand, turned to officiating after a knee injury ended her playing career. She found officiating to be a fulfilling way to stay involved in the sport and pursue a new path in her life.

Both Johnston and Harris earned their spots at the prospect tournament after attending the NHL Exposure Combine, a recruitment and development event for future officials. They will be officiating games featuring prospects from the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators, and Carolina Hurricanes. The tournament kicks off with a game between Carolina and Florida, followed by a matchup between Tampa Bay and Nashville.

For Johnston and Harris, hockey has always been a central part of their lives. Johnston, a former player in the NWHL, now balances officiating with medical school. Harris, who has officiated in various leagues while pursuing a Master’s Degree, sees officiating as a way to fulfill her passion for the sport. Both women are determined to continue their journey towards officiating in the NHL.

As they take the ice at the prospect tournament, Johnston and Harris are excited to see young players chasing their dreams. They find fulfillment in witnessing the players' aspirations come to fruition and hope to inspire others with their own pursuit of officiating in the NHL. The tournament represents another step towards their ultimate goal of officiating at the highest level of professional hockey.
