Justice Sought: Federal Charges Filed in Stabbing Death of Ukrainian Refugee on North Carolina Train
Federal authorities have charged Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr. with committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system in connection with the stabbing death of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a North Carolina train. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the need for strict penalties for Brown, citing failed soft-on-crime policies. The FBI Director Kash Patel expressed the urgency of ensuring justice for Zarutska and preventing further violence. The FBI Charlotte special agent in charge, James C. Barnacle Jr., hopes the federal charge will bring some measure of justice to Zarutska's family.
Brown, who was previously charged with first-degree murder in state court for Zarutska's death, was captured on surveillance video carrying out the seemingly unprovoked attack. Court documents revealed that Brown stabbed Zarutska multiple times with a folding knife. Brown's criminal history includes numerous arrests and convictions for various offenses, including robbery with a dangerous weapon, for which he served a prison sentence.

Zarutska, who fled Ukraine with her family to escape the war, was described as a talented artist and a dedicated individual by her family.
