Betting Scandal Rocks Men's College Basketball: NCAA Bans Three Players for Sports Betting Violations

The NCAA recently announced the banning of three men's college basketball players for engaging in sports betting activities related to their own games at Fresno State and San Jose State. The players, Mykell Robinson, Steven Vasquez, and Jalen Weaver, were found to have placed bets on each other's games and manipulated their performances to ensure certain bets were successful. As a result, their eligibility was permanently revoked.

The investigation into the players' activities began when a sports integrity monitoring service flagged suspicious prop bets on Robinson at a Nevada sportsbook operator. Robinson and Vasquez, who had been roommates at Fresno State, were found to have discussed underperforming in a game via text messages. Robinson also placed multiple bets on Weaver, his former teammate at Fresno State. The NCAA highlighted a specific game where Robinson placed several bets on his own performance, winning thousands of dollars in payouts.

Robinson's involvement in sports betting extended to daily fantasy sports prop bets as well. He placed bets on Weaver and other athletes, sharing information about betting lines with Weaver before placing bets. Vasquez and Robinson did not cooperate with the NCAA's investigation, while Weaver cooperated and acknowledged the violation in his case. All three players were released from their teams and are no longer enrolled at their respective schools.

Fresno State and San Jose State issued statements in response to the NCAA's findings, with Fresno State emphasizing its cooperation with the investigation and the lack of sanctions against the institution. San Jose State noted that Vasquez had already been removed from the roster and had graduated. The incident is the latest in a series of sports betting-related violations in college sports, prompting the NCAA to consider new rules regarding sports betting and game integrity.

The NCAA's enforcement staff has seen an increase in sports betting-related cases in recent years, leading to a focus on detecting and pursuing violations. A proposal to allow athletes and staff members to bet on professional sports while maintaining restrictions on college sports betting is under consideration. Current NCAA rules prohibit athletes and staff from engaging in sports betting for sports with NCAA championships, with violations risking a lifetime ban from college athletics.
