Quinn Halstead: A Hockey Journey of Resilience and Unity
Quinn Halstead has had a love for hockey since she was just 3 years old. Growing up in Cleveland, she played on boys' teams and never backed down from a challenge. When her family moved to Columbus in 2022, Quinn had the opportunity to interact with professional players like goalie Elvis Merzlikins, who admired her determination and spirit on the ice.
Despite her passion for the sport, Quinn's hockey journey took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor just as her season with the AAA Blue Jackets 12U girls team was beginning. Following a 10-hour surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, 95% of the tumor was successfully removed, and she is now undergoing radiation treatment to address the remaining portion.
Throughout this challenging time, Quinn's teammates and the Columbus Blue Jackets organization have shown unwavering support. The team has dedicated a locker room sign to her, known as "Quinn’s Crew," as a symbol of solidarity and encouragement. The hockey community at large, including NHL stars like Sidney Crosby and Brady Tkachuk, has also rallied around Quinn with messages of hope and positivity.
While Quinn focuses on her recovery and refrains from physical activity for the next three months, her goal remains to return to the ice and rejoin her teammates. Elvis Merzlikins, inspired by her resilience, has a special message for her: to never give up and keep striving for her goals. Quinn's story serves as a testament to the strength and unity found within the hockey community, showcasing the power of support and determination in overcoming challenges.
