Reality Winner: From Leaking NSA Documents to Writing a Memoir - A Story of Struggle and Redemption

In 2017, a contractor for the National Security Agency (NSA) leaked a classified document to the press, revealing Russia's cyber attacks before the 2016 presidential election. The contractor, Reality Winner, sent the document to The Intercept, but her identity was easily traced by the NSA. Winner faced trial under the Espionage Act, received a five-year sentence, and was released in 2021. Winner's story has been portrayed in various media, and she has now written a memoir titled "I Am Not Your Enemy."

Winner described the abhorrent conditions in the Georgia county jail where she was initially held, highlighting the poor facilities and treatment. After being transferred to a federal prison in Texas, she felt overwhelmed by the size of the compound. During the COVID-19 restrictions in prison, she and other inmates were confined to their cells without access to restrooms, and their movements were restricted within the unit.

Upon her release, Winner struggled with the darkness and fear of being alone in a room for the first time in years. She also faced conflict with her mother over her notoriety and social media presence, which could jeopardize her freedom. Winner is currently a level two CrossFit coach and studying veterinary technology at Texas A&M University Kingsville. Despite her achievements, as a convicted felon, she will never be able to obtain a license as a veterinary technician.
