2026 Kentucky Derby Qualifying Races: The Road to Churchill Downs

The Road to the 2026 Kentucky Derby has officially kicked off with the first qualifying race, the Grade 3, $300,000 Iroquois Stakes, taking place at Churchill Downs. Spice Runner emerged victorious in a photo-finish, earning 10 qualifying points for the Derby. The American qualifying pathway consists of 36 races leading up to the 1 1/4-mile Derby on May 2, 2026. The next set of Derby prep races will be held on October 4 at various tracks.

The American Road to the Derby features 21 races in the "prep season" and 15 races in the "championship series," with the latter offering significant points to the winners. The top 17 points earners will secure a spot in the Kentucky Derby. While a strong qualifying campaign does not guarantee success in the Derby, it is essential for securing a starting spot in the prestigious race.

The Kentucky Oaks, the companion race for 3-year-old fillies, also began its qualifying pathway with the Grade 3, $300,000 Pocahontas Stakes. Taken by the Wind emerged victorious, earning 10 qualifying points for the Oaks. The Oaks, like the Derby, will be held at Churchill Downs on May 1, 2026. The next Oaks qualifier will be the Alcibiades on October 3 at Keeneland.

In addition to the American Road to the Derby and Oaks, international horses can also secure spots in the Kentucky Derby. The Euro/Mideast Road to the Derby and Japan Road to the Derby offer opportunities for international contenders to earn a place in the Derby field. The international presence in the Derby has been growing, with horses from Japan making notable appearances in recent years.

As the journey to the 2026 Kentucky Derby and Oaks unfolds, fans and enthusiasts will be closely following the qualifying races to see which contenders emerge as potential stars in the making. The excitement and anticipation for the Run for the Roses and the Oaks continue to build as the qualifying season progresses.
