Bob Dylan's Intimate Reflections: The Story Behind 'Ballad in Plain D

Bob Dylan, a renowned lyricist, is known for his candid and autobiographical songs. In a 1985 interview with Bill Flanagan, Dylan discussed the personal nature of his songwriting. While he initially felt that "Idiot Wind" came close to being too personal, he later admitted that "Ballad in Plain D" was a song he regretted writing due to its intimate nature.
"Ballad in Plain D" recounts Dylan's breakup with his girlfriend Suze Rotolo, whom he met when he was 20 and she was 17. Despite the song's raw portrayal of their relationship, Rotolo understood Dylan's need to express himself through his art. Their romance eventually ended, partly due to Dylan's rising fame, but Rotolo viewed his songwriting as a cathartic process.
Rotolo, an Italian-American artist from Queens, NY, passed away in 2011 at the age of 67 after battling lung cancer. Despite the challenges they faced, Rotolo recognized the significance of Dylan's music in processing their shared experiences.
