Box Office Roundup: 'Demon Slayer' Dominates, 'Downton Abbey' Surprises, and 'Spinal Tap II' Disappoints

The box office landscape is unpredictable these days, with surprising hits and unexpected flops. This week, the anime film "Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle" shattered records with a massive $70 million opening, surpassing the previous anime opening record held by "Pokémon: The Movie." Despite limited screenings, the film achieved an impressive per-screen average of $21,100, making it Sony's biggest opening of the year.

"The Conjuring: Last Rites," last week's top film, experienced a significant drop in audience attendance but still performed well overall. Meanwhile, "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale" opened strong with $18.1 million, surpassing expectations for an older-skewing audience. Another standout was Lionsgate's "The Long Walk," a Stephen King adaptation that earned $11.5 million, proving to be a solid performer for the studio.

Disney also had success with limited engagements of "Toy Story" and "Hamilton," both streaming on Disney Plus in 4K. "Weapons" continued its impressive run, adding $2.72 million to its total. However, "Spinal Tap II: The Legend Continues" had a disappointing opening with only $1.6 million, falling short of expectations.

Looking ahead, the Jordan Peele-produced film "Him" is set to release next weekend. Will it be able to make a splash at the box office? Share your thoughts in the comments!
