Generational Crime: The Brown Family's Legacy of Violence and Tragedy

Decarlos Brown Jr., a homeless felon, has been accused of fatally stabbing a young Ukrainian commuter on a Charlotte light rail train. His family has a history of criminal activities, with his brother, Stacey Dejon Brown, serving a lengthy sentence for a 2012 shotgun slaying. Decarlos' sister, Tracey Vontrea Brown, also has a criminal record, including various charges like shoplifting and larceny. Their father, Decarlos Brown Sr., has faced multiple arrests for offenses like breaking and entering and possession of a weapon on a university campus.
The cycle of crime in the Brown family has now led to Decarlos Brown Jr.'s federal charge in the killing of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee. The incident, which occurred in August 2025, was a random and unprovoked attack that resulted in Zarutska's tragic death on American soil. The family's criminal history spans generations, with Stacey Brown previously using the Charlotte light rail to escape police after a murder in 2012.
Stacey Brown pleaded guilty to several violent offenses related to the 2012 murder, including second-degree murder, robbery, assault, and breaking or entering a motor vehicle. The recent incident involving Decarlos Brown Jr. mirrors the past, with Zarutska being stabbed to death on a train. Surveillance footage captured the violent encounter, showing Brown Jr. leaving the train with blood on him. He allegedly used a pocket knife to attack Zarutska, stabbing her three times in the throat.
Federal authorities have now charged Brown Jr. with committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system. The FBI Charlotte special agent in charge expressed hope that the federal charge would bring justice to Zarutska's family and hold the perpetrator accountable for the horrific act. Brown Jr. had previously faced a first-degree murder charge in state court for the same offense. The tragic incident highlights the need for safety and security in public transportation systems.
