Leading the Albert Lea High School Boys' Soccer Team to Success: Meet Coach Matt Humphrey

Matt Humphrey has taken on the role of head boys' soccer coach at Albert Lea High School this year. With a deep-rooted passion for soccer, Humphrey aims to lead the team to success. Having played soccer for the Albert Lea Tigers from a young age and coached youth soccer in the community for 12 years, Humphrey brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He is also the president of the board for the Albert Lea Youth Soccer Association.
In his role as head coach, Humphrey oversees four teams: 9A, 9B, junior varsity, and varsity. Working alongside three other new coaches, including former ALHS players, Humphrey is focused on developing the players and the program. The teams this year consist of young players, with most junior varsity players being eighth-graders and the varsity team mainly sophomores and seniors.
Humphrey's coaching style is described as laid back, emphasizing fun and a love for the game. He believes in working on mistakes during practice and encourages aggressive play, especially in the competitive Big Nine Conference. His goal for the season is to advance the team further in the section tournament.
Despite the challenges of the season, Humphrey remains optimistic about the team's progress. With an increase in student participation and promising performances, he sees bright things ahead for the program. The community can support the team at upcoming home games against Mankato West, Mankato East, and Red Wing.
As a dedicated coach and soccer enthusiast, Humphrey finds fulfillment in helping both the team and individual players improve their skills. He values the physicality and endurance required in soccer and aims to instill a love for the sport in his players. With a focus on growth and development, Humphrey is committed to guiding the team towards success on and off the field.
