Dunking Through the Decades: From Chamberlain to Dawkins

In the past, dunks were simple and routine, with players like Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell just putting the ball in the basket. Chamberlain even dunked his free throws, a practice that was eventually banned. The evolution of dunking began with Julius Erving in the ABA, where he showcased innovative moves that captivated fans. Darryl Dawkins, who joined the NBA straight out of high school, brought a new level of excitement to dunking with his creative and powerful slams. He gave unique names to his dunks, such as the Rim Wrecker and the In-Your-Face Disgrace, and even caused the NBA to introduce breakaway rims after breaking two backboards in 1979. Dawkins injected energy and flair into the league, reminiscent of Shaquille O'Neal's impact in later years. Tragically, Dawkins passed away in 2015 at the age of 58 from a heart attack.
