Emergency Evacuation at Alpha Ice Complex During USHL Fall Classic Tournament
A Pittsburgh-area ice rink faced an evacuation on Saturday due to elevated levels of carbon dioxide being detected during the USHL Fall Classic ice hockey tournament at the Alpha Ice Complex. Several children participating in the event reported feeling ill, prompting Harmar Township police to take action. The fire department was called in and found high readings of carbon dioxide, leading to the evacuation of the arena. As a precaution, the fire department ventilated the arena and searched for the source of the gas.
Fortunately, no players or adults required transportation from the scene. The incident occurred during a significant tournament where high-level high school players from various parts of the country had gathered in Pittsburgh to showcase their skills in front of scouts from the United States Hockey League, the premier junior hockey league in the nation.
