Gatwick Airport's Second Runway Approved: Boosting Capacity and Enhancing Operations

The Transport Secretary has approved Gatwick's proposal for a second runway to boost the airport's capacity by 100,000 flights annually. Currently, the existing northern runway is only used as a taxiway due to its proximity to the main runway. Gatwick plans to relocate the runway 12 meters away to enable simultaneous operations. The £2.2bn project is set to be privately funded and could be completed by the end of the decade. Gatwick is already the UK's second busiest airport and Europe's busiest single runway airport.
