Navigating On-Screen Intimacy: Olivia Colman's Candid Thoughts and Experiences
Olivia Colman, known for her role in The Roses, shared her thoughts on on-screen nudity and working with intimacy co-ordinators. During an interview on Amy Poehler's podcast Good Hang, Olivia revealed that she is not comfortable with sex scenes or simulated intimacy on screen. She expressed discomfort with showing skin or pretending to have sex with someone, feeling like it's unfaithful to her husband of over 20 years, Ed Sinclair.
Olivia mentioned that even simulated sex scenes with precautions like wearing clothes or using cushions between actors make her uneasy. She credited intimacy co-ordinators for their support in such situations, highlighting advice she received from leading intimacy co-ordinator Ita O'Brien about imagining the sun hitting your face when pretending to have an orgasm.
The actor's reservations about on-screen nudity stem from past experiences, including feeling betrayed during the filming of the comedy Confetti, where she felt her trust was broken regarding how much of her body would be shown. Olivia described this as the "worst experience of my life" in a 2011 interview and expressed lasting effects on her trust in people.
Despite her discomfort with on-screen intimacy, Olivia shared heartfelt moments about her relationship with her husband, Ed Sinclair, during the podcast. She reminisced about their first meeting in Cambridge, his support before her Oscar win in 2020, and emotional moments that brought tears to her eyes when talking about him.
