From the Raptors to Europe: The Journey of Freddie Gillespie in Professional Basketball

The Toronto Raptors have a history of developing lesser-known players into NBA talents, with examples like Fred VanVleet and Jose Calderon. Freddie Gillespie, a former big man for the Raptors, played college basketball at Baylor University before joining the team as an undrafted rookie. Despite his limited offensive output, Gillespie excelled on defense, showcasing his shot-blocking and stealing abilities.
After a brief stint with the Raptors, Gillespie moved on to the G League and later had a short tenure with the Orlando Magic before heading overseas to play in Europe. He found success with Bayern Munich and Crvena zvezda, winning league championships in Germany and Serbia, respectively. Now, Gillespie has signed with Galatasaray in Turkey, a team in the competitive Basketball Super League.
Galatasaray, historically one of Turkey's top clubs, has not won a league title since 2012-13, with Fenerbahce and Anadolu Efes dominating in recent years. Gillespie joins a roster that includes former college standout Jerome Robinson and has the opportunity to make an impact as a starter or key rotation player. While his NBA career may have taken a different path, Gillespie continues to contribute to successful teams in Europe, showcasing his skills on both ends of the court.
