Calgary Flames and Scotiabank Place in the Running to Host 2028 World Cup of Hockey

Alberta is in the running to host the next World Cup of Hockey, with the Calgary Flames vying to be one of the host cities for the 2028 tournament. The newly constructed Scotiabank Place in Calgary is among the 25 venues being considered by the NHL and NHLPA for the event. Flames president Robert Hayes expressed excitement about moving forward in the evaluation process.
The 2028 World Cup of Hockey is scheduled to take place in February 2028, with host cities from North America and Europe being considered. The final selection of host cities is expected to be announced in early 2026 after submissions from each city are reviewed by the NHL and NHLPA. The tournament will feature eight teams competing in a round-robin stage followed by an elimination stage.
The upcoming World Cup of Hockey will be the fourth edition of the tournament, following previous competitions in 1996, 2004, and 2016. The 2016 tournament was held in Toronto, where Team Canada emerged victorious by defeating Team Europe to claim the gold medal. Alberta's potential involvement in hosting the 2028 event adds to the anticipation surrounding the prestigious international hockey competition.
