Exploring the Darker Side of the MCU: A Review of Marvel Zombies

Marvel's What If...? series had a lot of potential but didn't quite live up to expectations. One standout episode was "What If... Zombies?!" which inspired the 4-episode limited series Marvel Zombies. The series follows Kamala Khan as she navigates a zombie-infested world with a group of survivors, including Blade Knight, Yelena Belova, and others, on a mission to save humanity. The show takes a darker tone compared to What If...? and explores the bleak aftermath of a zombie apocalypse in the MCU.
Iman Vellani's portrayal of Kamala Khan brings heart to Marvel Zombies, making her a compelling lead character. While other characters like Shang-Chi and Yelena have their own arcs, some characters feel underutilized or relegated to comic relief. The series could have benefited from more episodes to delve deeper into the characters and their stories, providing a more satisfying payoff for the audience.
Despite some exciting action sequences and the use of Kamala's powers in dire circumstances, Marvel Zombies feels rushed at times, leaving little room for character development. The series could have explored more backstories and given certain characters like Valkyrie and Red Guardian more depth. While entertaining, Marvel Zombies falls short of fully realizing its potential and leaves room for more storytelling beyond the limited series.
Marvel Zombies is now streaming on Disney+ and offers a darker take on the zombie apocalypse within the MCU.
