CHL 50th Anniversary: Celebrating 50 Years of Hockey Excellence

The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) and its Member Leagues, including the Western Hockey League (WHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), have kicked off the 2025–26 season, marking the 50th anniversary of the CHL. To commemorate this milestone, the league has introduced a special anniversary logo and announced various initiatives to celebrate its impact on hockey development in Canada, the United States, and globally.

The focal point of this significant season is the CHL's 50th Anniversary logo, featuring a prominent gold "50" symbolizing the League's golden jubilee. This emblem pays homage to the league's inception on May 8, 1975, when the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL established the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League (CMJHL), later renamed the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) in 1987.

As part of the festivities, the CHL will launch CHL Moments, a series that will showcase the most iconic and historic milestones in league history. This storytelling initiative will include editorial features, video highlights, alumni testimonials, and more, running from the start of the season through December. Additionally, the league will unveil the list of the CHL's Top 50 Players from the past five decades later in the season, recognizing the standout alumni who have shaped major junior hockey since the CHL's inception.

"The CHL's 50th Anniversary season is a celebration of our history, people, and passion that define us," said Dan MacKenzie, CHL President. The league, along with the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL, stands as the world's premier junior hockey leagues, thanks to the dedication of clubs, talent of players, and support of fans. This season is an opportunity to honor the legacy and continue shaping the future of the game for generations to come.

The Canadian Hockey League has been at the forefront of junior hockey in Canada for 50 years, with the Western Hockey League playing a pivotal role alongside the OHL and QMJHL. The 50th anniversary celebration acknowledges the players, clubs, champions, and fans who have contributed to the league's success over the years. The partnership between the leagues has created a legacy that transcends individual achievements, paving the way for another 50 years of excellence.

The Ontario Hockey League takes pride in being part of the CHL's legacy for the past 50 years, contributing to the league's status as the top supplier of players, coaches, and officials to the NHL. The OHL, in collaboration with the WHL and QMJHL, looks forward to continuing the development of future hockey stars and community leaders, building on the rich history of the CHL.

The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League Commissioner, Mario Cecchini, expressed excitement for the 50th anniversary celebrations, highlighting the memorable moments and elite players who have graced the CHL over the years. The season's festivities will be a testament to the league's enduring impact on the game of hockey.

The CHL and its Member Leagues have left an indelible mark on the game, producing a significant number of top NHL draft picks and contributing to the development of over 6,000 players since 1969. The leagues have consistently produced first-round selections and have been instrumental in shaping the careers of NHL legends and rising stars, solidifying their position as hockey's premier development pathway.

Looking ahead, the CHL 50th Anniversary season is not just about honoring the past but also about building the future of hockey excellence. With the continued support of players, fans, and partners, the CHL remains committed to developing the next generation of hockey talent for years to come.
