Revving Up: The Future of Putnam County's Multipurpose Speedway Project

A new multipurpose speedway project in Putnam County is gaining momentum as the Board of Commissioners has given the green light to acquire nearly 450 acres of land for the development. The project, located near the Palatka Municipal Airport, is spearheaded by Scott Lagasse Sr. and Scott Lagasse Jr., former NASCAR drivers who own TeamSLR in St. Augustine. The facility aims to serve as more than just a motorsports training ground, with plans to collaborate with law enforcement for vehicle training and offer auto sports technology courses through St. Johns River College.

Community partners have already joined forces with the speedway project, which will also host a teen driving program by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. Concerns from residents include potential noise levels and traffic congestion during events, prompting calls for sound reduction measures and traffic management strategies. Despite these concerns, the project is expected to boost tourism in the area, with plans for a 4-star hotel on the property.

The next steps for the speedway project involve submitting a land use change application for state approval and seeking a zoning map amendment from the Board of Commissioners. The final decision on the zoning map amendment is set to be made on October 14 at 9 a.m., marking the last hurdle before construction can commence. The speedway project holds promise for economic growth and community engagement in Putnam County.
